Horse

Breed Description:

The Hispano breed of horse is a tough and versatile animal that is utilized for many purposes in its native homeland of Spain. Typically bay, chestnut, or gray in color, the Hispano is especially known for its refined and rather long neck. The Hispano has strong shoulders and is wide in the chest, resulting in a powerful appearance and conformation. The head is handsome, square along the muzzle, and in excellent proportion to the rest of the body. Due to significant variation in height, the Hispano can appear to be as small as a pony, or as large as a standard saddle horse.

Temperament:
The Hispano breed of horse is an exceptionally willing worker, and can be put to a great number of different uses. However, the breed is accustomed to and was developed to be worked quite hard, and therefore Hispano horses that are not worked or are left to their own devices can become unruly. Because of this, the Hispano breed of horse requires a firm handler that has a dominant presence. Hispano horses are not recommended for children unless under close expert adult supervision.
Height:
14.3 hh to 16hh
Health Problems:
Health issues for the Hispano breed of horse are similar to any issues that may occur with the horse breeds that were predominantly used to develop the breed. These were the Arabian, Andalusian, and the Thoroughbred. Some conditions that may affect the breed are Lavender Foal Syndrome, Cerebellar Abiotrophy, and sometimes juvenile epilepsy. Only Lavender Foal Syndrome is detectable prior to foaling. Of significant concern with the Hispano breed of horse is Severe Combined Immunodeficiency disease, where a foal is born without an immune system. Responsible breeding can eliminate the occurrence of this condition, which is always fatal. While these diseases and conditions may be somewhat prevalent in the breeds used to develop the Hispano, the Hispano tends to be very hardy and shows fewer tendencies to develop these conditions than the breeds utilized to create it.
Origin:
The Hispano breed of horse was developed in Spain over the last 300 years. In general, the breed was created by crossing Arabians and Andalusians. At times Thoroughbred blood was introduced in order to refine the breed and lend it more agility and speed. The Hispano is primarily used in bullfighting, which is a very popular sport in Spain. Hispano horses are used to work bulls, to train young bulls, and for a number of other equestrian events, including jumping and dressage. The Hispano typically performs well in whatever task it is put to
