Breed Description: 

The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be robust and powerful. They should be well built with a long body that is slightly longer than they are tall. The top line should be strong and straight and there should be a slight tuck up on the stomach. The head should be broad with a long muzzle and the ears should be medium in length and hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long and tapered to a point.

The coat of the Hanoverian Hound should be short and thick. It should cover the dog completely and should be hard to the touch. The coat should be reddish-fawn that is slightly or strongly brindled, however, it can range in shade from light to dark. A mask is allowed as is a small white mark on the chest.

Temperament: 
The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog is a hard working breed that is known for being a hunting dog. They are always on the trail for something and are happy to follow their nose. They are usually very affectionate to their family and can do well in homes with children. They try to be obedient but they are used to working alone and does need firm training to get them listening. The Hanoverian Hound is usually good with other dogs but they do need to be properly socialized to accept other pets.

The average height for the Hanoverian Hound is between 19 to 22 inches.

The average weight for the Hanoverian Hound is between 66 to 77 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. In fact, the breed is not recommended for urban settings.
Exercise: 
The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities.

10 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Hanoverian Hound breed of dog was developed in Germany and is believed to have been developed in the 1600's, although crossbreeding with other scenthounds is believed to have continued until the 1800's. The breed is believed to have been descended from the St. Hubert Hound and the Heidebracke but it is unclear what other breeds went into it. While it has been introduced to a number of countries in the 1900's, it is still considered to be a rare breed.
