The head is long with a straight profile, set cleanly on medium length muscular neck. Its withers are prominent, back is long, and tail is set high. Both the chest and the girth are deep. The legs are somewhat short and well-muscled, with strong joints, and tough, nicely shaped feet.

Height:
The Groningen breed of horse stands 15.3 to 16.3 hands high.

Origin:
The Groningen breed of horse originated in the northwestern Dutch province of Groningen, and was developed by crossing East Friesian and Oldenburg breeds on native horses. Groningens nearly became extinct in the 1970s, when only one purebred stallion remained. Since then, breeders have taken action to ensure that the breed will continue. Oldenburg blood has been introduced to avoid too much inbreeding. The Groningen is a foundation type within the Dutch Warmblood stud book.
