Breed Description: 

The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is a large sized breed of dog that should be well-balanced and proportioned. They should have a robust look without appearing course or overweight. The top line of the Grand Griffon Vendeen should be straight and it should either be level or slightly sloped. The overall look should be of a sturdy dog with a regal and slightly square head. The ears should be pendulous and should hang down the side of the head while the tail should be long, tapered to a point and should be carried in a saber fashion.

The coat of the Grand Griffon Vendeen should consist of two coats. The undercoat should be short and dense and should cover the dog completely. The topcoat should be medium in length and should be dense. It should have a wiry texture to it and the face should have furnishings including eyebrows and a moustache. The coat can be a number of colors including hare, wild boar, fawn wiht black overlay, wolf, black and tan, white and orange, badger, white and black and tricolored. The fawn with black overlay coat can have white spotting.

Temperament: 
The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is a breed taht was developed for hunting and they thrive when they have something to do. While they can be energetic, the Grand Griffon Vendeen should be docile and calm. They can be stubborn and do require a strong owner who can give clear and consistent rules. The breed can be very sweet, and they are known for the passion, especially with hunting. The breed can do well with other dogs and pets and they are known for being very patient with children.
Height: 
The Grand Griffon Vendeen should be between 23.5 to 25.5 for a female and 24.5 to 27.5 for a male.
Weight: 
The weight of the Grand Griffon Vendeen should be in proportion to height but they commonly weight between 65 to 75 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has few known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is an active breed that requires plenty of space so they do better in a home with acreage, although they can do well in a home with a large fenced yard.
Exercise: 
The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is actually a very easy breed to grom and you should only have to brush the dog once or twice a week. The overall look of the dog should be shaggy and it is important to only bathe the dog when it is absolutely necessary. The hair on the face may need to be trimmed to keep the dog tidy. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis since the Grand Griffon Vendeen can suffer from ear infections and nails should be trimmed once or twice a week.
Origin: 
The Grand Griffon Vendeen breed of dog was developed in France in the coastal region of Vendee and can be traced back to the early 16th Century. The breed originated from the Grand Vendeen, which was a short coated, white hound and crossed with several Griffon breeds. The result was a versatile hunting dog that was used to hunt both large and small game. The breed has remained fairly uncommon and is considered to be a rare breed today.
