Breed Description: 

The Griffon Fauve de Bretange breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be athletic in appearance and have a wiry build. They should have a level top line and a slight tuck up and should give the appearance of a dog that has great stamina. The head should be narrow, however, it should taper slightly to the muzzle. The ears are long and set low on the head. They should hang and should be slightly turned. The tail should be medium in length and should be carried in a sickle like fashion.

The coat of the Griffon Fauve de Bretange should be short but have a rough and harsh texture to it. There should be a slightly wiry look, although the hair on the face should not appear too bushy. The color of the Griffon Fauve de Bretange should be a solid fawn color, although this can range in shade from a red fawn to a pale golden fawn. There can be a small patch of white on the chest and a few black hairs in the coat, however, a solid coat is preferred.

Temperament: 
The Griffon Fauve de Bretange breed of dog is a hunting breed and thrives when they have something to do. This intelligent breed can be stubborn and they do require a firm owner who can give clear rules. The breed is known for being very friendly and is usually very sociable. They can do well with children and are a loyal companion for their family. The breed can do well with other dogs but they do have a high prey drive and need proper socialization to accept other non-canine pets.

The average height for a Griffon Fauve de Bretange is between 19 to 22 inches.

The Griffon Fauve de Bretange breed of dog is actually a very easy breed to grom and you should only have to brush the dog once or twice a week. The overall look of the dog should be shaggy and it is important to only bathe the dog when it is absolutely necessary. The hair on the face may need to be trimmed to keep the dog tidy. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis since the Griffon Fauve de Bretange can suffer from ear infections and nails should be trimmed once or twice a week.
Origin: 
The Griffon Fauve de Bretange breed of dog is believed to be one of the oldest breeds of French scenthounds and while it is clear that the breed developed in France, it is not known when or how the breed was developed. What is known, is that there is evidence of the breed as early as the 14th Century and that they were commonly used for hunting wolves. After wolves disappeared in France, the breed faced extinctoin, however, their versatility as a hunting dog became a benefit and they began being used for both large and small game. The breed is still considered to be a rare breed to this day.
