Breed Description: 

The Greenland Dog breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that looks very similar to the American Eskimo, although the Greenland Dog is taller and thinner. They are robust and sturdily built and have the appearance of a dog with a large amount of stamina.

The coat of the Greenland Dog should be a double coat with a dense undercoat that protects them from extreme temperatures and a medium length topcoat that is thick and covers the dog completely.  The tail should be covered completely and it usually curls over the back of the dog, although not tightly.  The color of the Greenland Dog can be any color including white, black, brown, gray, white with gray, white with black or white with orange as well as many other colors.

 

Temperament: 
The Greenland Dog breed of dog is not for new or timid owners. This is a breed with a strong temperament and they need an owner that will give firm rules and consistent training. They are happiest when they have something to do and they can be very destructive when they aren't. They are usually very affectionate with their family and tend to be a one person dog. They aren't recommended for homes with children and can be aggressive with other dogs. They are usually very intelligent and can be extremely stubborn.
Height: 
The height of the Greenland Dog is between 22 to 25 inches.
Weight: 
The weight of the Greenland Dog is between 65 to 70 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Greenland Dog breed of dog has no known health problems and are considered to be a very hardy breed.
Living Conditions: 
The Greenland Dog breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. They can live in urban settings, however, they should have a medium sized back yard to use. The ideal living condition for the Greenland Dog is a country setting with several acres for them to play on. In addition, the Greenland Dog does not mind living outdoors but care should be taken in warmer climates since they can suffer from heat exhaustion if they are not given adequate shade and water. They do much better in cooler climates. They do require a fenced yard since they will roam.
Exercise: 
The Greenland Dog breed of dog is very active and thrives when it has something to do. Expect over 60 minutes of exercise each day and also make sure that you provide them with an activity or they will become destructive and unruly.
Life Expectancy: 
11 to 13 years
Grooming: 
The Greenland Dog breed of dog does require a fair amount of grooming and you should expect to brush your dog about two or three times per week. Bathing should also be done once every two or three months and the hair around the paws should be trimmed to prevent matting.
Origin: 
The Greenland Dog breed of dog is actually a very primitive dog and can trace its ancestry back over 12,000 years ago and it is still very similar to the Spitz-type breeds that existed in Siberia and was brought over to the Arctic areas at that time. The breed was developed by the Inuit people and it is believed that wolves may have been used to produce the dog, but it has remained relatively unchanged. The breed has remained rare, and the majority of Greenland Dogs that are produced today are exported from Greenland itself.
