Breed Description:

The Greek Hound breed of dog, also known as the Hellenikos Ichnilatis, is a breed that demonstrates true athleticism.  Nothing about this breed was designed for show and it can be seen in the smooth lines, robust build and well-balanced symmetry. They should be slightly longer than they are tall and the head should be slightly rounded with a rectangular muzzle.

The coat of the Greek Hound is short and smooth and should cover the dog completely.  The only accepted color for the Greek Hound is black with tan markings, although the tan can range in shade from light tan to a rich chestnut color.

Temperament:
The Greek Hound breed of dog is a passionate breed. They are known for being very outgoing and tend to be friendly with everyone. They are also very playful and are happy when they can do something with their family. They are very courageous and while the Greek Hound is friendly, they are usually more reserved and suspicious of strangers. They are a very strong dog and while they can do well with children, they need to be properly socialized and trained for this to happen. In addition, the Greek Hound is not recommended for new or timid owners since they can be a dominant breed and training can be difficult. They generally do very well with other dogs, but again, socialization is important.

The average height of the Greek Hound is between 18 to 22 inches.
Weight:
The average weight of the Greek Hound is between 38 to 44 pounds.

The Greek Hound breed of dog has no known health problems.
Living Conditions:

Exercise:
The Greek Hound breed of dog is an active breed that requires over 60 minutes of exercise each day. They are very energetic and always willing to play or work so they can make excellent jogging companions.
Life Expectancy:
10 to 11 years
Grooming:
The Greek Hound breed of dog is very easy to groom and only needs to be brushed once a week. They should have their ears cleaned on a weekly basis since the pendulous ears trap dirt and debris. Bathing should only be done when necessary and the Greek Hound can go several months without one. Wiping them down with a damp cloth will reduce any doggy odor and will keep them tidy between baths.
Origin:
The Greek Hound breed of dog, also known as the Hellenikos Ichnilatis originated in Greece and can trace its ancestory back thousands of years to an ancient breed of hunting dogs that lived in Southern Greece. The Greek Hound was originally developed as a hunting dog that was used primarily for hunting rabbits. The breed was quickly praised for its hunting abilities and began being imported across Europe and the Mediterranean and the breed is believed to be the foundation dog for many hunting breeds that exist today. The breed was officially recognized by the FCI in 1996.
