Bathing only needs to be done when necessary and a Grand Basset Griffon can go several months before needing a bath.
Origin:
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen breed of dog can actually trace its heritage back to the early 1500's and to a dog that was slightly larger than the breed is today. Like many of the other Basset breeds, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is believed to be developed from a larger scent hound that was used for hunting. However, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen was developed to use in thick undergrowth so the larger hounds were bred down. They were used for hunting rabbit, wild boar and even deer. Originally, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen was known as the Basset Griffon Vendeen and there were two types that could be found, the grand and the petit. Both types came from the same litters but in the 1970's, the two varieties became breeds of their own and any cross breeding between the two breeds was prohibited. The breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1996 and is in the AKC Foundation Stock Services.
