Breed Description:

The German Wirehaired Pointer breed of dog is a versatile, multi-purpose hunter of powerful, medium size. Along with his facial furnishings, his functional wiry coat is the breed's most distinctive feature, protecting the dog from weather, water and rough cover. His coat is liver and white in color. He is intelligent, energetic and focused. The head of the German Wirehaired Pointer breed of dog is moderately long. His brown eyes are medium size, oval, bright and clear, under medium length eyebrows. His ears are rounded and hang close to the head. His muzzle is fairly long, with a dark brown nose with wide open nostrils. His jaws are strong, with evenly set teeth that meet in a true scissors bite. The German Wirehaired Pointer has a medium length, slightly arched neck with no dewlap. The back line shows a perceptible slope down from withers to croup. The skin is notably tight to the body. His chest is deep and capacious and his back short, straight and strong. His tail is set high, docked at about 2/5 of the original length, and carried at or above the horizontal when the dog is alert. The shoulders are well laid back, legs straight and strong, with webbed feet, high arches and thick pads. His nails are strong and heavy. The German Wirehaired Pointer breed of dog has a double coat. The undercoat is dense enough in winter to insulate against the cold but is so thin in summer as to be almost invisible. The distinctive outer coat is straight, harsh, wiry and flat lying, and is from one to two inches in length. The outer coat is shorter on the lower legs, and is softer between the toes. The coat is naturally short and close fitting on the dog's skull, but dense and heavy over the shoulders and around the tail. The German Wirehaired Pointer has strong, straight eyebrows. His beard and whiskers are medium length. His coat is liver and white, either liver and white spotted, liver roan, liver and white spotted with ticking and roaning or solid liver. The head is liver, sometimes with a white blaze. Ears are liver. The German Wirehaired Pointer breed of dog has a free and smooth motion, with good reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the hindquarters. As speed increases, the legs will converge toward a center line of travel.
