Breed Description:

The German Shorthaired Pointer breed of dog is a highly exuberant, medium size dog with a short sleek coat, and comes in solid liver, liver and white spotted and/or ticked and liver roan. He is noted for his intelligence and zest for life. A versatile hunter, he excels in both field and water. He is graceful, with a clean head, good bone structure, and an overall look of nobility and animation. The head of the German Shorthaired Pointer breed of dog is proportionate to the body, with medium dark brown eyes that radiate energy. His ears are broad, set fairly high, and lie flat. His skull is reasonably broad, arched on the side and slightly round on top. His jaw is quite powerful, with well developed muscles. The muzzle is sufficiently long to enable the dog to seize game properly and carry it for a long time. His nose is brown, the larger the better, with open nostrils. The teeth are strong and healthy, meeting in a true scissors bite. The neck of the German Shorthaired Pointer breed of dog slopes downwards on a curving line; his name is somewhat muscular and becomes gradually larger toward the shoulders. Moderate throatiness is permitted. The skin is close and tight. His chest seems deep rather than broad, his back is short, strong, and straight. His loin is strong, moderately long, and slightly arched. The hips are broad with hip sockets wide apart and fall slightly toward the tail in a graceful curve. The tail is set high and firm, and must be docked to leave roughly 40% of its length. The tail hangs down when the dog is quiet and is held horizontally when he is walking. The German Shorthaired Pointer breed of dog has muscular, sloping shoulders, strong hindquarters, and feet that are compact, close-knit and round to spoon-shaped. His toes are sufficiently arched with solid nails. Pads are strong, hard and thick. The German Shorthaired Pointer has a short, thick outer coat-- rough and hard -- and a dense short undercoat. His coat is somewhat longer on the underside of the tail and the back edges of the haunches. It may be solid liver, liver roan, or a combination of liver and white such as liver and white ticked, liver and white spotted, or liver patched and white ticked. The German Shorthaired Pointer breed of dog has a smooth lithe gait. The forelegs reach well ahead, while the hindquarters drive the back legs smoothly and powerfully.
