Breed Description: 

The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be sturdy and have the appearance of a powerful dog without appearing coarse or overweight. They should be athletic in appearance and bring to mind a dog that has ample stamina. The top line of the Petit Gascon Saintongeois should be slightly sloping and there should be a slight tuck up. The head of the Petit Gascon Saintongeois should be narrow and slightly domed and the ears should be long and should taper slightly to a point. They should hang down the side of the head and be set fairly low on the dog. The tail should be long and carried in a saber like fashion.

The coat of the Petit Gascon Saintongeois should be short and dense and should lay close to the skin. The breed only comes in one color marking and that is black and white, although it can be patched, ticked, speckled or a combination of all three. There should be tan points on the inside of the ear, over the eyes, and on the cheeks. Some tan specking can often be found on the legs.

Temperament: 
The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for being an exceptional hunting dog that is always ready to work. The breed is known for their hard working nature and while they can be trained, they tend to be stubborn so they need a firm owner who can set clear rules. The breed does exceptionally well with other dogs but they are not recommended for homes with smaller, non-canine pets since they have a strong prey drive. The Petit Gascon Saintongeois is usually very good for children and can provide a patient and playful companion to them.

The average height for a Petit Gascon Saintongeois is between 22 to 24.5 inches.

The average weight for a Petit Gascon Saintongeois is between 50 to 55 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. In addition, the breed can be quite vocal and may not be the best breed for urban settings.
Exercise: 
The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

Grooming: 
The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Petit Gascon Saintongeois breed of dog was developed from the Grand Gascon Saintongeois. It is believed that the breed is simply a reduction of the Grand Gascon Saintongeois and for this reason, the traits and the looks between the two are very similar. That being said, it is believed that several other hound breeds were introduced into the line to create the Petit Gascon Saintongeois including the Airegeois. While the Grand Gascon Saintongeois is considered to be a rare breed, the Petit Gascon Saintongeois is believed to be the one of the most rare breed of hounds.
