Breed Description:

The French Bulldog breed of dog is a small, muscular bulldog with heavy bones, erect bat ears, and a big, kind heart. He is playful and sociable, relatively active, but not rambunctious. His short, dense coat can be brindle, fawn, white or brindle and white. The head of the French Bulldog breed of dog is large and square. He has dark round eyes, set wide apart and low in the skull, as far from his ears as possible. His distinctive bat ears are broad at the base and elongated, with a round top, set high on the head but not too close together. The top of the skull is flat between the ears; the forehead is not flat but slightly rounded. His muzzle is broad, deep and well laid back, with well developed muscles in his cheeks. The stop is so well defined that it causes a hollow groove between the eyes, with heavy wrinkles forming a soft roll over the extremely short, black nose. His flews are likewise black, are thick and broad, and hang over the lower jaw at the sides, meeting the underlip in front and covering the teeth. His teeth are not seen when he closes his mouth. His underjaw is deep, square, broad, undershot and well turned up. The neck of the French Bulldog is thick and well arched with loose skin at the throat. The back is a roach back, strong and short. He is broad at the shoulders and narrow at the loins. The body is short and well rounded. The chest is broad and deep. His tail can be either straight or screwed (but not curly), but is always short, low and tapes to a fine tip. The French Bulldog's legs are short, stout, straight, muscular and set wide apart. His moderately sized feet are compact, with compact, split toes and short stubby nails. Hind legs are longer than the forelegs, so as to elevate the loins above the shoulders. The coat of the French Bulldog breed of dog is somewhat fine, short and smooth. His skin is soft and loose, especially around the head and shoulders, forming wrinkles. He may be brindle, fawn, white or brindle and white. In fact, all colors are acceptable except for solid black, mouse, liver, black and tan, black and white, and white with black. The correct gait for the French Bulldog breed of dog is double tracking with reach and drive. His action should always be unrestrained, free and vigorous.

Temperament:
The French Bulldog breed of dog is inquisitive, affectionate, playful and bright. He gets on well with everyone, including other pets and children. In training, he responds best to love and positive reinforcement.
Height:
12 inches
Weight:
18 to 28 pounds
Health Problems:
The French Bulldog breed of dog is vulnerable to allergies, elongated soft palate, von Willebrand disease, intervertebral disk disease, brachycephalic syndrome and stenotic nares.
Living Conditions:
The French Bulldog breed of dog is well-suited to apartment living, so long as he gets regular walks around the neighborhood. He is sensitive to heat, however, and should not be exercised in the heat because of his short muzzle. He also should be given a high quality diet, as he may be sensitive to fillers used in lower-quality food.
Exercise:
The French Bulldog breed of dog is moderately energetic. He does not need a lot of exercise, but does -- like all dogs -- need his daily walks to keep him in good trim. He should be monitored (and not over-exercised) in hot climates and summer weather, as he is sensitive to the heat.
Life Expectancy:
10 to 12 years
Grooming:
The French Bulldog breed of dog is relatively easy to keep clean and tidy. His short soft coat needs only occasional brushing. The wrinkles on his face should be checked regularly, however, to ensure that they are clean and dry and infection-free.
Origin:
The French Bulldog originated in France, but from the English Bulldog. The English Bulldog was brought to France by lace makers in the late 19th century, where they were bred with various French breeds. Originally there were two types of French Bulldogs: one with rose ears (folded) and one with the bat ears that the French Bulldog is known for today.
