Breed Description: 

The Finnish Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be athletic in appearance. The should be a sturdy with a level top line and should be slightly longer than they are tall. They should have the appearance of a hunting dog that is powerful and built for endurance. The tail should be medium in length and carried in a saber like fashion. The head should be broad and the ears should be long and hang down the side of the cheeks.

The coat of the dog should be short in length and dense with a natural shine to it. They should be tri-colored with tan, black and white.

Temperament: 
The Finnish Hound breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is definitely the optimal hunting breed. They are usually energetic and hardworking. They are eager to get to work and thrive when they can do something. The breed is usually very friendly and they can do well with children. In fact, they are considered to have a calm and well balanced temperament. The breed does need a strong owner who can give clear and consistent rules. They can do well with other dogs but need ample socialization to accept other smaller, non-canine pets.
Height: 
The average height for the Finnish Hound is between 20 to 24 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Finnish Hound is between 45 to 55 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Finnish Hound breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Finnish Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. The breed can be quite vocal so they many not be suited to urban living.
Exercise: 
The Finnish Hound breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities.

10 to 12 years
Grooming: 
The Finnish Hound breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Finnish Hound breed of dog was developed in Finland and is believed to have been developed in the 1800's. It is believed that French hounds were crossed with both German and Swedish hounds and the result was the hunting dog that was used for hunting over hilly terrain. The breed is very rare throughout the world, however, in its country of origin, the Finnish Hound is quite popular.
