Origin:
The Field Spaniel breed of dog, despite its rarity, is actually an old breed of dog that can be traced back to the early 1800's. The breed was created by crossing Spaniel with the Cocker Spaniel and then by introducing a number of other breeds including the Norfolk Spaniel, the English Springer Spaniel, the Basset Hound and the Irish Water Spaniel. Other breeds may have been used but they were not documented and much of the Field Spaniel's origins are mere speculation. What we know for sure is that the Field Spaniel was used and designed for hunting. They became a popular breed for huntsmen and they have the recognition of being amongst the first breeds accepted by the AKC. Despite their popularity, the Field Spaniel began to decline in numbers in the early 1900's and they have remained rare ever since.
