Breed Description: 

The  Feist breed of dog is a small breed that is graceful and agile. This is a breed with a straight top line and a slightly longer than tall build. They should have long legs but should never appear leggy. The head should be sturdy with a strong muzzle and the ears should be high on the head with a slight fold.  They should have a natural snub tail but the ones that don't should have the tail docked.

The coat of the Feist should be short and should cover the dog completely.  The texture to the coat should be smooth and it can be found in any color but the common color is primarily white with markings that are either red, blue, black, tan or red brindle in color.

Temperament: 
The Feist breed of dog is an active and friendly breed that is intelligent and tend to be independent. They can be very loving but they also have a temperament that is very similar to a terrier temperament. They are dedicated to their owners and tend to be suspicious of strangers. They can do well with children and other dogs if they are raised with them but they have a strong prey drive and are not suitable for homes with small pets.
Height: 
The average weight of a Feist is between 12 to 30 pounds.
Weight: 
The average height of a Feist is between 10 to 18 inches.
Health Problems: 
The Feist has no known health problems and are considered to be a very hardy breed.
Living Conditions: 
The Feist breed of dog is a small breed of dog but they are not recommended for apartments. They have high energy levels and do much better in homes with a large fenced yard. In addition, they do bark and this can lead to many problems if there are noise restrictions in your neighborhood. While the Feist loves being outdoors, they are not recommended as outdoor dogs. A fenced yard is important with this breed because they have a strong prey drive and will chase other small animals and backyard wildlife.
Exercise: 
The Feist breed of dog is an active breed and should receive between 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.
Life Expectancy: 
12 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Feist breed of dog does not require a lot of grooming and only needs to be brushed weekly or biweekly. Bathing should only be done when it is absolutely necessary. Nails should be kept trimmed and the ears should be cleaned on a regular basis.
Origin: 
The Feist breed of dog can trace its origins back to small terrier like breeds that were developed in the Southern United States by farmers looking for a small hunting dog that could also deal with vermin problems. The breed was developed to be as low maintenance as possible and was developed by crossing several hunting hounds with terriers. The Feist can actually trace its history back almost 200 years, although it has remained rather uncommon and unknown and it was even mentioned by both President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington. There are actually several different strains of Feist, although they all share similar characteristics, including Mountain Feist, American Treeing Feist, Kemmer Feist, Treeing Feist, Charlie Feist, Barger Stock Feist, Thornburg Feist, Mullins Feist, Denmark Feist and Pencil-tail Feist.
