The Entlebucher Mountain Dog, although being the smallest, was originally developed as a herding and guard dog. They can be traced back to molosoid breeds that were brought to Switzerland with the Romans but they were developed in Switzerland to herd cattle. The breed, which being popular in Switzerland, quickly fell out of use near the end of the 19th century and due to improper breeding, especially with German Shepherds, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog was almost completely wiped out. If it weren't for the efforts of Professor Albert Heim and several dedicated breeders, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog would now be extinct. Even with renewed interest in the breed, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is considered to be a rare breed of dog.
