Breed Description: 

The English Shepherd breed of dog is a medium sized breed that should be slightly longer than they are tall. They should have an athletic build that is well balanced and muscled without appearing massive or large. The head should be wedge shaped with a slightly rounded skull and an apparent stop between the muzzle and the skull. Ears are usually medium in length and folded to hang down the side of the head. The tail is usually long and full.  They are described as looking very similar to the Border Collie.

The coat of the English Shepherd should consist of a double coat that has a short, dense undercoat, which is soft in texture. The top coat should be medium in length with feathering on the tail, ears and chest and shorter hair on the legs and head.  The coat should be medium in texture.  The coat color of the English Shepherd is usually bi-colored with either a black and tan or black and white coat, although some are tri-colored with a black, white and tan.

Temperament: 
The English Shepherd breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for their hard working personality and their ability to stay on a job for a long time. This is a breed that is made for working and they will gladly work alongside their owner through the day and then protect them through the night. They are often suspicious of strangers and they do need to be properly socialized for them to get along well with other pets and dogs. The breed is known for being very energetic so they aren't often the best breed for everyone but they are very friendly and affectionate and they make an excellent family dog.

The average height for an English Shepherd is between 18 to 23 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for an English Shepherd is between 40 to 60 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The English Shepherd breed of dog is considered to be a very healthy breed and currently, they are only known to suffer from Elbow Dysplasia.
Living Conditions: 
The English Shepherd breed of dog s not recommended for apartment. This is a breed that needs room to run and the ideal home is one with a large fenced yard.
Exercise: 
The English Shepherd breed of dog is a very energetic breed and require at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. They do have excess stores of energy and if they are not properly exercised they can become very destructive. English Shepherds make excellent jogging companions.

12 to 15 years
Grooming: 
The English Shepherd breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and you should only expect to brush the coat about once per week, however, you will need to brush it two or three times a week during shedding periods. They do not need a bath on a regular basis and can go most of the year with only one or two. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and the nails should be clipped once or twice a week, but other than that, nothing more really needs to be done.
Origin: 
The English Shepherd breed of dog that is believed to be a very old breed and while it is unclear what breeds went into developing it, we do know that the breed was originally used for herding. In addition, while the breed is called the English Shepherd, it is believed that they are much older and were actually brought to England when the Romans invaded it around 55BC. The breed thrived in England but it wasn't until the 1800's that it began to grow in popularity, becoming an beloved farming and guarding breed. Although it is unclear when the English Shepherd arrived in North America, it is believed that they arrived with early setters. The breed did lose popularity in the 1950's, due to the Border Collie but over the last few decades, it has gained some popularity, especially since agility competitions have become popular.
