Breed Description: 

The English Coonhound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be athletic in appearance with a build that is muscular and well-balanced. They should have a level top line and a they should be slightly longer than they are tall. The head should have a square shape and the ears should be long and hang down the side of the head. The tail should be medium in length and should be carried high.

The coat of the English Coonhound should be short and dense. It should cover the dog completely and there should be a rough texture to it. The breed can be found in a range of hound colors including tri-colored, bi-colored, and ticked in either white and black, white and red or white and blue.

Temperament: 
The English Coonhound breed of dog is a hard working, active breed that thrives when they have something to do. This is a hunting dog that excels at hunting but is also a very good companion dog. They genuinely love people as long as they are in their family and they are often a patient and playful companion for children. They can be very protective of their family and are often very suspicious of strangers. The breed is not recommended for new owners since this is a confident breed that needs to be trained by a confident owner. The breed is not recommended for multi-pet homes since they can be aggressive towards dogs and their high prey drive makes them an unsuitable match for homes with small pets.

The average height of the English Coonhound is between 21 to 27 inches.

The average weight of the English Coonhound is between 40 to 65 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The English Coonhound breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and there are no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The English Coonhound breed of dog is not recommended for apartment. This is a breed that needs room to run and the ideal home is one with a large fenced yard. A fence is a must with this breed since they will often chase after any scent that draws their attention.
Exercise: 
The English Coonhound breed of dog breed of dog is a very energetic breed and require at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. They do have excess stores of energy and if they are not properly exercised they can become very destructive. English Coonhounds make excellent jogging companions but it is important to keep them on leash when they are not in a secure area or they will wander away.

Grooming: 
The English Coonhound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. Bathing should be done only when it is necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The English Coonhound breed of dog was developed in England and is actually considered to be a term used for any type of treeing coonhound dog breed. Origianlly, the English Coonhound was known as the English Fox and Coonhound since it was primarily used for fox hunting and is believed to have been developed from the English Foxhound. However, in the early 1900's, the breed was separated from that title and coonhounds were separated into three breeds; the Redbone Coonhound, the Black and Tan Coonhound and finally, the English Coonhound, which all other coonhound breeds were grouped together. The breed continued to evolve and two other breeds were separated from the English Coonhound including the Treeing Walker Coonhound and the Bluetick Coonhound. Originally, all coonhounds were developed for hunting and despite some variation in coats, they are still very similar from breed to breed.
