Breed Description:

The Dorkie breed of dog is a "designer" or mixed breed that was created by crossing the Dachshund with the Yorkshire Terrier. Because of this, a breed type has not been established and the looks and temperament of the dog can greatly change from one puppy to the next. Generally, the Dorkie will have qualities of both parents. They are usually a toy to small sized breed of dog that has an elongated body, although not as elongated as the Dachshund. The overall look should be of a robust dog with a slightly domed head and a slender muzzle. The ears are usually long and folded to the side and the tail is usually medium in length. The Dorkie should have a level top line.

The coat of the Dorkie can range in texture and length depending on the parent that they take after. Usually, it is medium length coat that has an almost wiry appearance. The coat should have a shorter undercoat and the hair on the head, ears, tail and legs is commonly shorter than the rest of the dog. They can be found in any colors that are common for the parent breeds but the most common are either brown or a black and tan coat.

Temperament:
The Dorkie breed of dog is a designer breed and because of this, their temperament can vary greatly. They are known for being a very mischievous dog that is always letting their curiosity get them into trouble, although they remain happy and playful no matter how much trouble they get into. The breed is very affectionate and they love being with their family, so much so that they can suffer from separation anxiety. They are not recommended for homes with small children and they can be quite yappy, especially when excited. The breed does very well with other dogs and pets.
