Dogs, Cats and Horses Art

Art Galleries

Art Galleries are found world wide, from Hong Kong to London, to Amsterdam, throughout the USA, and South America. Some of these galleries whose exhibitions change several times a year, exhibit work by artists who use as their subject matter, animals. Art Galleries, represent artists working in all mediums: prints, photographs, sculpture, paintings, and even videos and multi media. One such artist world known for his work in many mediums for example, Robert Wilson. He did a series called ‘The Vroom Portraits.’ These were made on special TV screens in which, while portraits, there was slight movement going on within each, as one stood in front of them looking at the portrait. As Mr. Wilson is also deeply involved with music, often music accompanied each piece. In his exhibition which traveled to major cities and galleries around the world while portraits of stars such as Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt were rendered, there were also portraits of animals Mr. Wilson was very drawn to rendering in this way. One was of a dog, Selene, who is a briard. This dog belonged to the owner of The Green Pet Community, but the portrait was created years before the site was created. A show of this kind is more about the artist and what he has been working on, and not specifically at all about “ pets” for example. However, certain galleries do focus and show only art about animals during their exhibitions. They either make group shows using different artists to follow a theme about animals, or they may do an exhibition by an artist who always uses animals as the subject matter of his work.

Some art galleries focus on animal art from certain periods of history. Others show certain contemporary artists. Such an artist for example, known for his work in photographs is William Wegman. He has photographed his Weimaraners for years and can be found at certain galleries where he is aligned. Always his subject matter is the dogs. Such an artist also will do commissions. But in his art, the subject matter was used as one might use any subject matter to probe the nature of his craft and possible expression of it. His work is found in many contemporary museums, as is the work of Mr. Wilson. Also much of Mr. Wilson’s work is also about performance.

We will list galleries where art of animals can be found. As galleries do exist world wide, no doubt it will take time to find those who do work with animal artists. In time we hope they will find this site and let us know who they are and what they carry in this genre.

What excites me as an artist are those moments of seeing an animal's mood, an expression or attitude. And, only through working and gaining a better knowledge of handling paint and the principles of fine art such as shape, value, edge and color can I achieve what I love to see. A journey that I have discovered is unending. Animals and art are both A's in my book. I use every vehicle to achieve my aim of painting expression. Plein aire painting, photography, set ups, books, and workshops are some of the methods that I use. But deep down, I believe that drawing is one of the most important elements of achieving success in a painting. With a drawing skill, I can move legs, perk up the ears, swish a tail or add emotion to the eyes. I thank God for all the moments of personal joy that I have experienced through my paintings, and of course, it's even better when I capture the viewer and bring them into my world of art.
