Dog shampoos
As you’ve probably already noticed there are hundreds of puppy and dog shampoos available for every type of dog and skin condition imaginable. You then have the choice of man made shampoos or organic/eco-friendly shampoos. These can range from being unbelievably cheap to exceptionally pricey.
A great start for most skin conditions is an oatmeal based shampoo, this works wonders on itchy skin, dry and flaky skin such as dandruff and also for dogs that have sensitive skin. As for deodorising shampoos these come in almost every scent you can imagine.
Show grooming products tend to focus more on the dogs coat type and colour. They can be more expensive than regular dog shampoo, but if you want the best results they are worth their price. These shampoos are ones that will bring out the dogs' colour. For example, if you have a white dog, a white dog shampoo will enhance the colour and make your dogs coat stand out. You can also buy shampoos for almost every colour including gold, brown and red. These can really make a difference to the dogs' coat colour.
Another aspect show groomers will take into consideration is the dogs' coat type. A dog with long silky hair will need either a shampoo that de-tangles, to keep the coat smooth, or a shampoo that will produce a ‘shiny’ coat. Products are available for every coat type, from short to long, straight to curly and everything in-between.
Although for a family pet these can seem unnecessary, there is no reason you couldn’t use these on your pets at home to make their coats stand out.
You can also buy dry dog shampoos, these you either spray onto the dog or rub into its coat. Then depending on the brand you either leave it in the dogs' coat, or brush it out.
Puppy shampoos differ from regular shampoos because as a puppy their fur is completely different and their skin is more sensitive. For these reasons, the shampoos are milder and should be used until the dog has its adult coat.
However, if a regular shampoo says that it’s ‘puppy safe’ then it means it has a milder formula and would be fine to use.
Recently there has been an increase of products that are organic and/or eco-friendly. These are great if you are willing to spend the extra money. Not only will they produce the same results, but they contain no man-made chemicals which can be especially beneficial to dogs with sensitive skin, as well as being environmentally friendly.
The best dog shampoo you can buy would be one that works for both you and your dog. There’s no point spending a fortune on products when your dog spends a lot of time outside getting mucky. A basic shampoo would do. However if your dog is more of an indoors dog or a lap dog that you want to look its best it’s worth getting the more professional products. When looking for an organic shampoo make sure it says “ Certified Organic.”
