Types of Dog Leashes
Using a leash to restrain a dog grew out of necessity over the hundreds of years that man and dog have been acquainted. Having some sort of connection to prevent losing a dog or to keep it under control during working conditions was extremely important for early dog handlers, just as it is very important today.
For hundreds of years man has used the dog’s many qualities to aid them in hunting, herding, protection and sport. Early mosaics from Pompeii, which date back as far as 4400 B.C., show humans holding dogs on leashes. These people typically used dogs as working animals for hunting and needed to keep them contained at times to be successful. 7th century tablets also show humans using dogs as war weapons and controlling these aggressive animals using leashes. As time passed, people began using dogs as property protection, hunting, herding and as companion animals. They used leashes to prevent losing their valuable working and protection dogs from theft or run-offs. Since then, the style and use of dog leashes has grown to support the many different ways that humans keep and use dogs.
Today humans keep dogs as both working animals and as pets. A leash is a necessary tool for just about anybody with a dog, and in some cases leashes are required by law. There are many types of dog leashes available on the market, in hundreds of different styles, colors, lengths, materials and uses. They can be made of nylon, leather, chain or plastics and can be rigid, flexible or expandable. Many people use dog leashes as fashion statements. Choosing the right leash for your dog depends on what activities you and your dog intent to do.

Types of leashes
- The standard leash can be any length and have a variety of connection devices including snaps or clasps. They can be made with almost any kind of material and work to keep a connection and control between the handler and dog.
- No-Pull leashes are designed to help people contain dogs that pull when walking on a leash. These leashes can connect around the nose, chest or legs of the dog and apply pressure to help teach the dog not to pull on its own.

- Coupler leashes have attachments for more than one leash, making walking several dogs on a single leash more practical.
- Harness leads allow you to control the dog while avoiding putting pressure on the dog’s neck region.
