A History of Dog Collars
Dogs and humans obviously go way back. Before we raised cows, trained birds, and even before we had ever seen a buffalo, we had canine companions. Both the new world and the old world are home to dog remains dating back at least 12,000 years, buried in the company of their human masters. But when did we start decorating our dogs with dog collars, obviously we felt the need to restrain them using collars, and identifying them with collars? If you could imagine collars go back as far as ancient Egypt and Rome, yes they even had fancy dog collars as assign of wealth and status.
Egyptians long associated with their loved their cats shared a very deep love of canines as well. In fact, even though dogs were not as revered in the home, they served more often than cats as gods and as symbols. Dogs were never depicted as "pets," but always as hunters or protectors. We have even witnessed them being mummified with their masters.
Collaring and leashing became the standard in dog training at the pinnacle of ancient Roman and Egyptian civilization. The dog collars of course were works of art clearly displaying the status of the master and the beast.
