Dog Balls

Dog Balls

One of the oldest dog toys in the world has to be the ball. For many people, the quintessential dog ball is the tennis ball, but there are many, many options and considerations for dog balls.

Kinds of dog balls:

There are dog balls made of tennis ball material, which is inexpensive and easy to find. Many dogs enjoy playing with these and the balls are firm but usually not so firm that the dog can’t squeeze it a bit.

Other balls are made of rubbery plastic or vinyl. These balls range in size and are highly squeezeable. The best part of this style of ball is that most of them have squeakers inside, which for many dogs makes the ball more exciting.

Larger dog balls are a lot of fun for large breed dogs as well as feisty small ones like terriers and corgis that love to chase moving objects. Inexpensive, smaller sized basketballs and soccer balls make good options, but for an aggressive chewer or player, these can be popped and destroyed. Some toy manufacturers make oversized, harder balls so that the dog can chase the ball but not destroy it.

Considerations:

While dog balls are fun, there are a few safety considerations:

• Ball size: Make sure that the ball is appropriately sized to the individual dog. A ball that is too small can either be swallowed or choked on. Many dogs have choked and died on tennis balls that were too small for the dog breed size.

• Squeaker damage: If a ball is played with a lot, the squeaker is loosened in the process. They can pop out or break, and if you’re not careful, the dog can eat it.

• Ball damage: The soccer balls and basketballs made for people shed off the leather coating as the dog bites it, making it not always an ideal option for some dogs. Make sure to supervise dogs during play and remove toy when overly damaged.

• Home damage: These balls all fly easily! Dogs will often throw the ball and perhaps hit something, so indoor play needs to exercise caution to avoid damage to the house.
