Breed Description: 

The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog, also known as the German Spaniel,is a medium sized breed of dog that should be well-built with an athletic body. The breed should be significantly longer than it is tall and the top line should be level. The head should be well-formed and the ears should hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long.

The coat of the Deutscher Wachtelhund should be a double coat with a soft, dense undercoat and a long top coat. The top coat should be slightly rough in texture and it can range from wavy to curly. There should be feathering on the back of legs, chest, ears and tail. The Deutscher Wachtelhund can be found in a brown and gray coat color.

Temperament: 
The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog is a hard working breed that is known for being very intelligent. This is not a breed for the new or timid owner and it is only recommended for owners who can set firm rules and give consistent training. The Deutscher Wachtelhund is happiest when they have something to do and they love getting outside. They are extremely social dogs and they thrive when they are with other animals or their family. They do well in homes with other dogs but may not be suited to homes with smaller pets. The breed is usually very friendly. They are okay with children but are better suited to homes with older kids.

Health Problems: 
The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog is considered to be a very healthy breed, however, hip dysplasia is commonly seen in this breed and should be checked before purchasing a puppy.
Living Conditions: 
The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is an active dog that does best when they have a large fenced yard. I tis important that this breed have a fence since they do have a strong prey drive and will run after animals that they see as prey. They are not recommended as an outdoor dog. but they can do well in kennel settings.
Exercise: 
The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog is a high energy breed and requires about 60 minutes of good exercise every day. Without proper exercise, this breed can become very destructive and is only happy when they have something to do.
Life Expectancy: 
12 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog should be brushed two or three times per week and during heavy shedding periods of the year, they should be brushed on a daily basis. They should be bathed about once per month and the ears should be kept clean and dry.
Origin: 
The Deutscher Wachtelhund breed of dog was developed in Germany and was originally used for hunting both game and fowl. The breed today is rare but it is still used as a versatile hunting dog that can hunt a range of prey in a variety of terrains.
