Breed Description: 

The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be robust and sturdy in appearance. They should have an elongated body that is seen in the Dachshund breeds, however, the legs should be straight. The body should be low slung and the top line should be level. The head of the Westphalian Dachsbracke should be large, however, it should be in proportion to the body. The ears should be medium in length and hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long and slightly curled down.

The coat of the Westphalian Dachsbracke should be short and thick. It should lay flat on the skin and should be close to it. The most common coat color is red with white and a black saddle, however, red with white is also common. The red can range in shade from yellowish-red to orange-red and the white should be on the the chest, neck, tail tip, feet and face.

Temperament: 
The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for being fearless and tenacious. This is a hunting breed that is used to hunting larger game. They are dedicated to hunting and have the energy and endurance to work for long hours. The breed is usually better suited to those who enjoy hunting but they have shown an exceptional ability with children of all ages. In addition, the Westphalian Dachsbracke usually does well with other dogs and they can learn to accept smaller, non-canine pets, although some care should be taken since they can have a high prey drive.
Height: 
The average height for a Westphalian Dachsbrake should be between 12 to 15 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Westphalian Dachsbracke should be between 32 to 33 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems. They do have an elongated body so they may have some spinal health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog can do well in apartments if they are given proper exercise. The breed does need a fenced yard if they have access to a yard.
Exercise: 
The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog is an active breed and should receive between 45 to 60 minutes of exercise on a daily basis.
Life Expectancy: 
10 to 12 years
Grooming: 
The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Westphalian Dachsbracke breed of dog was developed in Germany and is believed to be a fairly old breed, dating back to the 1800's, however, it wasn't known as the Westphalian Dachsbracke until 1935. It is unclear what breeds went into the creation of the Westphalian Dachsbracke, but we do know that it is the foundation breed for the Drever. The Westphalian Dachsbracke is an uncommon breed of dog.
