Breed Description:
The Cretan Hound breed of dog is meek, affectionate, aristocratic yet deadly on the chase. They are clean, gentle and elegant. They are slightly reserved with strangers but naturally inquisitive and tolerant. They get along well with other pets but may chase the neighbor’s cat. They are good with children.

Origin:
The Cretan Hound breed of dog is a primitive hunting breed and they have inhabited the island of Crete for at least 3500 years. They are a tracking and coursing hound and they use both sight and scent to find their prey. They are used primarily to hunt hare and wild rabbits on their native island. They were praised by classical authors and were exported all over Europe in ancient times. They may be one of the oldest dog breeds in Europe. Today the dogs are relatively rare even on Crete due to the very strict breeding practices of the Cretans and they are rarely allowed to leave the island. Comments
