Breed Description: 

The Coton de Tulear breed of dog is a small dog of the Bichon family with soft, cottony hair, a dark nose and dark, expressive eyes.  They originated in the island of Madagascar.

 

The Coton de Tulear breed of dog has medium to long hair (four to six inches long) that is fluffy.  It is said to be more like hair than fur.  They are said to be a low-shedding breed and goo for allergy-sufferers.  In the U.S. the coat may be white, black and white or tri color which can include “honeybear” — white with lemon or champagne coloring on the ears, face or back.  The nose is black or dark.  The teeth are a scissors or pincer bite.  The eyes are round, dark and wide-set.  The expression should be lively, intelligent, bright and merry.  The ears are triangular and set high.  The ear leather should be thin.  The neck is strong without dewlap and slightly arched.  The chest of the dog is well-developed and reaches below the elbows.  The paws are small and arched.  The dog’s back should be strong and slightly arched.  The body is of moderate length and should have a moderate tuck up.  The loin is muscular and not too long.  The dewclaws may be removed.  The tail is low set and tapering.  It i carried over the back when in motion or excited.  Otherwise the tail is relaxed. 

 

 

 

 

Temperament: 
The Coton de Tulear breed of dog is playful, affectionate and intelligent. These dogs do need proper socialization from an early age to keep them from developing separation anxiety or becoming shy. They are usually very trainable.
Height: 
The Coton de Tulear breed of dog may stand up to 13 inches tall at the shoulder.
Weight: 
The Coton de Tulear breed of dog may weigh up to 18 pounds.
Exercise: 
The Coton de Tulear breed of dog is usually quite active and enjoys doing things with their owners. They need regular daily exercise and prefer to spend time playing and taking part in activities with their family.
Life Expectancy: 
The Coton de Tulear breed of dog has a typical lifespan of around 14 to 16 years.
Grooming: 
The coat of the Coton de Tulear breed of dog requires daily grooming. They do not shed very much but the dead coat needs to be brushed and combed out often. Remove excess hair from between the paw pads and inside the ears. It’s not usually necessary to bathe the dogs very often because of their coat texture. The coat of the Coton de Tulear is not clippered or scissored but left natural. Clean the ears regularly to avoid ear infections.
Origin: 
These little dogs were probably brought to Madagascar by pirates or French troops several centuries ago. They have only been introduced to Europe and the U.S. since the 1970s. They are still relatively rare in the U.S. today. Coton de Tulear breeders are opposed to joining the American Kennel Club. The breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI).
