Breed Description:

The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is one of the original nine breeds registered by the AKC. His long, low build is unusual for a spaniel. Playful and agreeable, the Clumber Spaniel makes up for in enthusiasm and diligence what he lacks in speed. He has a lovely white coat, which may have lemon or orange-colored markings. The Clumber Spaniel is rectangular in shape, with massive bone structure. Its head is likewise massive, with a marked stop and heavy brow. A slight furrow runs between the eyes and up through the center of the skull. The muzzle is broad and deep, enabling the Clumber Spaniel easily to retrieve game. His nose is large and square and any shade of brown in color. The flews of the upper jaw are strongly developed and overlap the lower jaw. A scissors bite is preferred. The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog has dark amber eyes that are large and soft and deep set in either a diamond shaped rim or a rim with a "V" on the bottom and a curve on the top. His ears are broad on top with thick ear leather. The ears are triangular in shape with a rounded lower edge and set low. The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog should have a long, strong and muscular neck. His back is straight, long and level. The brisket is deep, ribs well sprung, and chest both deep and wide. His tail is well feathered and set on just below the line of back; the Clumber Spaniel ordinarily holds his tail level with the topline or slightly elevated. His tail may be docked or left natural. The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog has short forelegs, straight and heavy in bone, with elbows held close to the body. Pasterns are strong and only slightly sloped. The front feet are large and compact, with thick pads. Dewclaws may be removed. Clumber Spaniels' thighs are heavily muscled. Hock to heel is short and perpendicular to the ground. The rear feet are not as large or as round as the front feet, but have the same thick pads. The coat of the Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is dense, straight, flat and weather resistant. It is soft to the touch, not harsh. The hair on the ears is slightly feathered, while feathering on the legs and belly is moderate. The Clumber Spaniel has a good neck frill, which should never be shaved. Hair on the feet should be trimmed neatly to show their natural outline. The rear legs may be trimmed up to the point of the hock. Tail feathering may be tidied. Trimming of whiskers is optional. The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is primarily a white dog, with lemon color or orange color markings. Markings often occur on one or both ears and the face. Facial markings may include color around one or both eyes, freckling on the muzzle and a spot on top of the head. Freckles on the legs and/or a spot near the root of the tail are also frequently seen and acceptable. The body should have as few markings as possible. The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog moves easily and freely with good reach in front and strong drive from behind. His wide body and short legs make him tend to roll slightly when in motion. The "Clumber roll" occurs when the dog reaches forward with the rear leg toward the centerline of travel and rotates the hip downward while the back remains level and straight.

Temperament:
The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is sweet and mellow as an adult, playful as a puppy. He is an excellent companion for children, and enjoys spending his family time either hanging out or swimming and retrieving. He can be wary of strangers, but is utterly devoted to his family.
Height:
17 to 20 inches
Weight:
55 to 85 pounds
Health Problems:
The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is associated with the following health issues: retinal dysplasia, hip dysplasia, entropion, heart disease, and autoimmune problems.
Living Conditions:
The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is happiest outdoors. Even so, he is relatively quiet indoors, so he can adapt to apartment living so long as he gets a few brisk walks a day. He is well suited to country living.
Exercise:
The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog lives to swim and retrieve, and is happy working as a hunting dog at a leisurely pace. He loves being outdoors and off-leash, but is also happy with several long strolls on a daily basis.
Life Expectancy:
10 to 12 years
Grooming:
The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog is a relatively heavy shedder year-round, and needs regular brushing and combing, particularly of his feathering, which also should be trimmed. In addition, the wrinkles on his face need to be kept clean and dry in order to keep him infection-free. Would-be owners also should be aware that the Clumber Spaniel drools and slobbers a fair bit.
Origin:
The Clumber Spaniel breed of dog hails from England, where it was developed in the 1700s. It was apparently named after the estate of the English Duke of Newcastle, Clumber Park, an early devotee of the breed. The Clumber Spaniel was initially used to flush and retrieve birds. He is still an excellent hunter, working alone or in a pack.
