Origin:
The Chinese Imperial Dog breed of dog is said to have originated in China more than 2000 years ago. These dogs were favorites of the Chinese Imperial family. Chinese Imperial Dog breeders maintain that the Chinese Imperial Dog breed of dog is a separate breed from the Shih Tzu and has been for a long time. According to Chinese Imperial Dog breeders the dogs were inadvertently classified as Shih Tzus after the death of the Empress in 1908 when some of them came to Europe. Today these breeders are trying to re-establish the Chinese Imperial Dog breed of dog as its own separate breed, distinct from the Shih Tzu. The breed is currently recognized by a number of rare breed and international registries.
