Breed Description: 

The Chien d'Artois breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be athletic and sturdy without appearing coarse. They should be muscular and should have a slightly longer build than they are tall. The top line should be level and strong. The head should be broad and slightly rounded with a square looking muzzle. The ears should be long and should hang down the side of the head with broad tip. The tail should be long and carried in a sickle like fashion.

The coat of the Chien d'Artois should be short and dense and should lay flat on the skin. The coat should be a dark fawn tricolor with white being the primary coat color and fawn on the head with black overlay.

Temperament: 
The Chien d'Artois breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for being an exceptional hunting dog that is always ready to work. The breed is known for their hard working nature and while they can be trained, they tend to be stubborn so they need a firm owner who can set clear rules. The breed does exceptionally well with other dogs but they are not recommended for homes with smaller, non-canine pets since they have a strong prey drive.

Health Problems: 
The Chien d'Artois breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Chien d'Artois breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. In addition, the breed can be quite vocal and may not be the best breed for urban settings.
Exercise: 
The Chien d'Artois breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

Grooming: 
The Chien d'Artois breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Chien d'Artois breed of dog was developed in France and was used primarily for hunting small game, however, it was also used for hunting larger game such as deer and wild boar. The breed was used in a pack and while we do not know how the breed was developed, it is believed that the Chien d'Artois was the foundation stock for many hound breeds. The breed was nearly wiped out during World War II, however, they were reconstructed in France during the 1970's. They have remained a rare breed to this day.
