Pronunciation:
(CAR-lin PIN-scher)
Breed Description:

The Carlin Pinscher breed of dog is said to be patient and pleasant “like a Pug.” They still retain some of the Miniature Pinscher’s terrier-like behaviors. The Carlin Pinscher breed of dog is even tempered, stable, playful, charming, dignified and outgoing with a loving disposition. They are usually gentle dogs and get along well with children.

Height:
The Carlin Pinscher breed of dog stands 11 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder.
Weight:
These dogs weigh 12 to 14 pounds.
Exercise:
These dogs don’t require a lot of exercise but they do need regular daily exercise to maintain good health. Any fenced yard should have a fence high enough to prevent them from escaping since they like to explore.
Life Expectancy:
The Carlin Pinscher breed of dog may live 15 or more years according to one source.
Grooming:
Grooming a Carlin Pinscher breed of dog is relatively easy. They have a short, smooth, hard coat that should be brushed regularly to prevent excessive shedding. Ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent ear infections.
Origin:
The breed originated in the 1990s as a cross between the Miniature Pinscher and the Pug. Other breeds have since contributed to the cross. The name “Carlin” refers to the Pug — known in some countries as the Carlin. The idea for the breed came in 1992 when Isabeau Morgan and Katushka Vitrichenko saw dogs that looked like miniature Rottweilers in France. They were told that the dogs were a cross of Pugs and English Toy Terriers. Later, in Hawaii, Kawika Buenafe saw a dog that looked like a toy Rottweiler. The owner said the dog was a cross of Miniature Pinscher and Pug. Later, Morgan and Buenafe’s Miniature Pinscher sired an accidental litter with a black Pug. Three puppies were produced which all looked like miniature Rottweilers. Later the trio decided to repeat the breedings intentionally. At this point most Carlin Pinschers only have one or two generations of documented breeding. There are plans to apply for club recognition in the future as a developing breed.
