With the eradication of wolves in northern Portugal most farmers lost their reasons for keeping this dog in the early 20th century and the breed was in danger of dying out. In 1914 the breed was first exhibited at a dog show and by 1935 there was a written breed standard for the breed. It was recognized by the United Kennel Club in the United States in 2006. There are still very few of these dogs left in the world. There are only estimated to be some 500 Cao de Castro Laboreiros remaining in the world today.
