Breed Description:
The Cao da Serra de Aires breed of dog is lively and intelligent. He may be wary of strangers but he is devoted to home and hearth. He is devoted, clever, high-spirited, happy and eager to work. He can be dominant and stubborn with an insecure owner.

The Cao da Serra de Aires breed of dog stands 16 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder.

Origin:
The origin of the Cao da Serra de Aires is slightly unclear. The dogs likely date from the early 1900s when local mountain dogs were probably bred with imported Briards, which would explain the breed’s coat. The breed was almost extinct by the 1970s when breeders began trying to save them. Today these lovable sheepdogs are very popular in Portugal, though they are not very well known outside the country. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1996. It was recognized by the UKC in the United States in 2006 under the name Portuguese Sheepdog.
