Canned Dog Food

Many better brands of canned dog foods use the terms “ super premium”, or “natural” and “organic” on their labels. This means they are not using meat “ by products” in the their foods. Meat by products are the parts of meat not used from food animals for human consumption. The better brands instead use things like the spine and ribs without the expensive breast meat. Ingredient quality claims like “ human grade” on some labels really doesn’t mean anything in the pet industry. Many claims are marketing efforts.

The use of the word “ Natural” so often seen today on dog food does in fact broadly allow for artificially processed ingredients. Foods can have the words “ natural or organic” in their brand names for sheer marketing purposes and it is a bit misleading. Look for named meats on the label as the first ingredient. Avoid canned dog foods that use “ by products”, or at the very least avoid those that use by products as the only source of animal protein. Grain sources should be whole grains. Avoid BHT, BHA, ethoxyquin preservatives. Better choice foods are preserved with vitamin E or vitamin C. If using a canned food that is 95% meat or 100% meat it is to be used as supplemental food with a dry food. The labels will give you a ratio amount generally. And if Canned and Dry dog Foods do not seem like what you want to do, there is raw diets and home cooked diets. One reference for home cooked dog meals is a book by Rudi Elalati, BARKERS GRUB: Easy, Wholesome Home Cooking for Dogs.
