Breed Description: 

The Canaan breed of dog is an athletic and well-balanced, medium sized dog.  They should be well-shaped with a lean build that is not too lean to appear fragile. The head should be wedge shaped and the ears should be set high on the head and stand erect.  The top line of the dog should be level with a square build that is equal in length as in height. The medium length tail should curl over the back.

The coat of the Canaan Dog should have two coats.  The undercoat should be short and dense and should have a soft texture.  The undercoat should lay flat on the dog.  The top coat should be slightly longer than the undercoat while still remaining short.  It should also lay flat and should create a smooth line on the dog.  The texture should be rough and should cover the dog.  The color of the Canaan Dog can be solid, patched or patterned.  The colors are black, black and white, liver, liver and white, brown, brown and white tan, white, red, or sandy.  They can have a symmetrical mask on the face and on solids, there can be a small patch of white on the chest, tip of the tail or feet, although not always.

 

Temperament: 
The Canaan Dog breed of dog is definitely not for everyone and the breed is known for being a strong willed and intelligent breed. This is a dog that really needs a firm owner who can set consistent rules and provide proper training. The Canaan Dog is usually affectionate with their owners and can make a wonderful family dog that is very gentle with children, however, the breed is naturally wary of strangers and makes an excellent guard dog. The breed is not the ideal breed for multi-pet homes since they do have a high prey drive and can be aggressive with other dogs, however, with proper socialization, the Canaan Dog can be a well-rounded family pet.

The average height for a Canaan Dog is between 19 to 24 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Canaan Dog is between 35 to 55 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Canaan Dog breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Canaan Dog breed of dog can do very well in apartments if they are properly exercised. If they have access to a yard, it is important that it is fenced since the Canaan Dog does have a high prey drive and will heedlessly chase neighborhood animals.
Exercise: 
The Canaan Dog breed of dog is a very active breed and requires between 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. The breed should be exercised on lead since they will run away after other animals. In addition, exercise is a must with this breed since they will become very destructive if they are bored.
Life Expectancy: 
12 to 15 years
Grooming: 
The Canaan Dog breed of dog does not require a lot of maintenance and can be kept tidy with only one brushing each week. In addition, the Canaan Dog only requires a bath every few months and can do with only one or two baths a year. In between baths, the Canaan Dog can be kept clean with a damp cloth. Ears should be cleaned on a weekly basis and nails should be trimmed once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Canaan Dog breed of dog is considered to be a primitive breed and is believed to have changed little in the time that they have existed. Although little is known about the breed, it is believed that the Canaan Dog was used by nomads as early as 2200 BC, perhaps earlier. They were commonly as a guard dog by Bedouin nomads and were commonly found in Southern Israel. The breed was unknown until the 1930's, when Dr. Rudolphina Menzel tried to establish the partly feral breed. Her efforts focused on perfecting the breed so it would protect Jewish settlements. The breed has remained rare throughout its history, although it was imported into the United States in the mid-sixties and has gained some fanciers since then.
