Bringing Home a New Kitten: A Guide for the New Cat Owner

Cats are known for being one of the lowest maintenance pets you could possibly bring home. However, that does not mean they require no maintenance.  A new cat owner should be aware of what their new pet will need for a happy existence. Before adopting a feline companion, have the proper supplies ready and know what to expect from your new pet!

Kitten Behavior

Just like children, kittens go through various life stages. Each stage can produce a new behavior in your cat. That adorable ball of fur you brought home weeks ago may start to shift into a demonic terror. At about four months, it is not unusual for kittens to suddenly play rough. For a new owner, that can mean painful nips and scratching. Some new owners are turned off at this stage in life, assuming their cat is simply “bad” or misbehaving. In some cases, it can lead to the kitten being re-homed or sent to a shelter, a problem that can be easily avoided.

However, just like the “terrible two's” in childhood, the kitten will eventually grow out of this stage.  It is part of healthy development for your kitten and as he or she grows, the kitty “dark side” will fade.
