Horse

Breed Description:

The Brandenburger breed of horse, also known simply as the Brandenburg, is a warmblood saddle horse that originated in Germany during the 1400’s. Utilizing local working breed stock such as Hanoveranians and Trakehners, the Brandenburger breed of horse was designed to be a multi-purpose animal. Usually bay, the Brandenburger can also be any solid color such as chestnut, black, brown, and rarely, gray. The Brandenburger breed of horse has a medium sized head and neck, and very strong legs. Its straight back allows for both pleasure riding and medium to heavy farm work.

Temperament:
The Brandenburger breed of horse is a very willing and able worker. Eager to please, the Brandenburger is exceptionally active and easy-going. However, the horse tends to be slightly nervous in nature, making it more suited to experienced or very determined handlers.
Height:
16.1 hh to 17.2 hh
Health Problems:
Years of careful and responsible breeding have created a Brandenburger breed of horse that is an impressively healthy animal. There are no known genetic or congenital defects in the breed. However, animals that are not bred in the native land of Germany should be carefully inspected and certified by a qualified veterinarian.
Origin:
The Brandenburger breed of horse was established in Germany more than 600 years ago. German officials at the time grouped several types of working horses together and created a versatile individual breed that would later become standardized as the Brandenburger. At the time, there was a strong demand for a horse that could work farmland, pull carriages, and perform under saddle as well. This resulted in a horse that remains much the same today, as the Brandenburger breed of horse is an adept performer in nearly all types of work, eventing, sport, and pleasure. The breed standard as it is known today has been virtually unchanged since the early 20th century, when German officials and Brandenburger enthusiasts sought to create a more permanent breed type.
