Life Expectancy:

Grooming:
The Bracco Italiano breed of dog has a short, dense coat but it requires regular brushing to prevent it from shedding in the house. The breed has pendulous ears so regular ear cleaning is necessary to prevent ear infections.
Origin:
Some claim that the Bracco Italiano dates back to the 4th or 5th century BC. Other sources say that the breed can be dated to the 14th century when they are depicted in Italian frescoes. The breed may have evolved from crosses of the Segugio Italiano and the Asiatic Mastiff or it may be a descendant of the famous St. Hubert Hound — the ancestor of the Bloodhound and the Beagle. It does seem that the Italiano Bracco breed of dog originated in two separate places. Versions of the dog were developed in both the Piedmont of Italy (the Piedmontese Pointer) and in Lombardy (the Lombard Pointer). The Medici and the Gonzago families both bred the Bracco Italiano during the Renaissance when the breed thrived. They were much desired by wealthy families as hunting dogs. The breed became almost extinct by the 19th and early 20th centuries. A breed standard was created in 1949 and the breed was brought to England in 1988. The breed is not very well known in its native Italy but it is currently in the Foundation Stock Service of the AKC. It is registered by the FCI, the UKC and the Kennel Club in Britain.
