The coat of the Bolognese should be very long and dense.  It should cover the dog completely and have a soft in texture.  It should have a fluffy appearance and the hair should form flocks but it is important that the hair never fringes or cords.  The only color found in the Bolognese is white.

Temperament:
The Bolognese breed of dog is an affectionate breed that is known for their devotion and calm disposition. This is a happy breed but they are not a high energy breed that needs constant stimulation. In fact, many owners are surprised at how easy it is to exercise the Bolognese and are even more surprised by the energetic little dog that emerges the moment they step outside. The breed can be very playful and the Bolognese are usually clown like in their enthusiasm. The breed does very well with other pets and dogs but they are better suited to homes with older children. They thrive when they are with their owners and this is a breed that can suffer from separation anxiety.

The average height for a Bolognese is between 10 to 12 inches.
Weight:
The average weight for a Bolognese is between 4 to 9 pounds.

Life Expectancy:
12 to 15 years
Grooming:
The Bolognese breed of dog can be difficult to groom if they keep them in a full coat. Expect to brush them on a regular basis and you will need to hand strip the coat to remove mats. You may have to trim the coat every few weeks to keep it tidy. The Bolognese should be bathed once every month or two, ears should be cleaned weekly and nails should be trimmed once or twice a month.
Origin:
The Bolognese breed of dog is a fairly uncommon and unknown breed but that does not mean that it is a new breed. In fact, the breed is very old and can be traced back to as early as Ancient Rome when the small, white dog was given as gifts. While we have traced the breed back that far, it is unclear what breeds went into the development of the Bolognese. It is believed that the breed originated from the “canes melitenses”, which were mentioned by Aristotle but not much more is known of the breed's origins than that.
