Origin:
The Boerboel breed of dog was developed in South Africa and is also known as the African Boerboel. While it is unclear what breeds went into creating the Boerboel, we do know that it can be traced back to the British Settlers who came to South Africa in the 1820's. With them came several mastiff and bulldog type breeds and it is believed that the breed was developed from these dogs and may also have been crossed with the Hottentot dogs. The breed was developed as a guard dog and has gained a strong following throughout South Africa and are currently becoming a more familiar breed today in other parts of the world.
