Breed Description: 

The Blue Lacy breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be athletic in appearance.  They should be very sturdy in appearance and muscular without appearing too course. They should be slightly longer than they are tall and there should be a straight back that is streamlined. The legs should be long without making the dog appear leggy and the ears should hang down the side of the head. The tail of the Blue Lacy should be long and tapered to a point. The ears should be large and should hang to the side of the head.

The coat of the Blue Lacy should be a short, smooth coat that is usually rough to the touch and is tight against the skin. The color of the Blue Lacy can be red, cream, red, blue and tan or yellow. The most desired color is a slate blue color, which is also the more common color of the breed.

Temperament: 
The Blue Lacy breed of dog is a hard working breed that is known for being intelligent and affectionate. This is a breed that loves to work and they thrive when they have something to do. The Blue Lacy is usually very intelligent and are usually happy to learn. This makes training them fairly easy, however, the Blue Lacy does not respond well to harsh corrections so it is very important to use proper corrections with this breed. The Blue Lacy does well with children of all ages and can provide an active playmate for a child. They do very well with other dogs and pets and are usually a very friendly dog.

The average height for a Blue Lacy is between 18 to 25 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Blue Lacy is between 25 to 50 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Blue Lacy breed of dog is a very hardy breed of dog with no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Blue Lacy breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. They are an active breed and need a yard to exercise in. The ideal home for a Blue Lacy is a home with acreage for the dog to explore.
Exercise: 
The Blue Lacy breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities. The Blue Lacy can make an excellent jogging companion and can do very well in a range of dog sports.

14 to 16 years
Grooming: 
The Blue Lacy breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the Blue Lacy can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Blue Lacy breed of dog was developed in the United States and more specifically in Texas. The breed can attribute its origins to the Lacy family, who were successful ranchers in the mid-1800's. When the Lacy family moved from Kentucky to Texas, they needed a breed that could work as both a herding breed and a hunting breed. It is unclear what went into the creation of the Blue Lacy, however, it is believed that the Italian Greyhound, the July Hound, the Redbone Hound and several other scenthounds were crossed with coyotes.
