Breed Description: 

The Black Mouth Cur breed of dog is a medium to large sized breed that has the overall appearance of a powerful and agile dog. They should be very sturdy in appearance and muscular without appearing too course. They should be slightly longer than they are tall and there should be a straight back that is streamlined. The legs should be long without making the dog appear leggy and the ears should hang down the side of the head. The tail of the Black Mouth Cur should be long and tapered to a point but some can be born bob tailed and some owners opt to dock the tail.

The coat of the Black Mouth Cur should consist of a soft and dense undercoat and a short, smooth top coat that is usually rough to the touch. The color should be tan or brindle and there can be a dark black color on the muzzle, hence the name Black Mouth Cur, however, some are born with out the black mouth.

Temperament: 
The Black Mouth Cur breed of dog is not a breed for new or timid owners. This is not a submissive dog by any means and the breed is usually an independent thinker and a courageous hunter. The Black Mouth Cur is very loyal to their family and they tend to be very protective. They are usually affectionate with people in their home but tend to be more reserved and suspicious of strangers. The Black Mouth Cur can do well with other dogs with proper socialization and training, but are not recommended for homes with small pets since they have a strong prey drive.

The Black Mouth Cur breed of dog was developed in the Southern United States and was used as a hunting dog. Little is known about the breeds that went into creating the Black Mouth Cur but we do know that the breed has been commonly used for hunting bear, deer and raccoons along with a number of other animals.
