Breed Description:
The Berner Niederlaufhund breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be robust and sturdy. They should be well-built with good proportion. The build should be slightly longer than they are tall and they should have a level top line. The head should be broad, with a long and slender look from the front. It should give the dog a noble appearance. The ears should be long and should hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long and slightly curved.
The Berner Niederlaufhund has two coat types:
Smooth: The coat of the dog should be short in length and dense. There should be a soft undercoat and the top coat should be hard to the touch.
Wire: This is a short coat that is hard to the touch. There should be evidence of a beard on the face and there should only be one coat.
The only color that is accepted for the Berner Niederlaufhund is white, black and tan.
Temperament:
The Berner Niederlaufhund breed of dog is an affectionate and loyal breed that is known for being very intelligent and hard working. The breed is known for being a very good family pet and usually get along well with children of all ages. They do have a high level of energy and can become destructive if they are bored. The breed is usually good with other dogs but they need proper socialization to accept other pets. It is important to note that the breed is a hunting dog and thrives when it can work and expel any energy it has.

Living Conditions:
The Berner Niederlaufhund breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. In fact, the breed is better suited to country living and does not do well in rural settings.
Exercise:
The Berner Niederlaufhund breed of dog is a very active breed that requires between 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love to work so it is important to give this breed something to do.

Grooming:
The Berner Niederlaufhund breed of dog breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths. The wire coated Niderlaufhund has the same grooming needs, however, some trimming and stripping may be needed to keep the coat tidy.
Origin:
The Berner Niederlaufhund breed of dog was developed in Switzerland and was commonly used for hunting, especially in enclosed shoots. The breed is related to the Swiss Hound and was actually developed from the breed in an attempt to create a dog that could worker in more enclosed terrains. The breed is one of four different Schweizer Niederlaufhund, all of them being identical in look and temperament with the only difference being their coat color.
