Breed Description: 

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog is a medium sized dog that should be low to the ground and sturdy in appearance. While they have an elongated body, they shouldn't be as elongated as other Basset breeds. The top line should be level and strong and the overall look should be of a dog with ample stamina. The head of the Basset Fauve de Bretagne should be narrow, however, it should taper slightly to the muzzle. The ears are long and set low on the head. They should hang and should be slightly turned. The tail should be medium in length and should be carried in a sickle like fashion.

The coat should be short but have a rough and harsh texture to it. There should be a slightly wiry look, although the hair on the face should not appear too bushy but there should be evidence of face furnishings. The color of the Basset Fauve de Bretagne should be a solid fawn color, although this can range in shade from a red fawn to a pale golden fawn. There can be a small patch of white on the chest and a few black hairs in the coat, however, a solid coat is preferred.

Temperament: 
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog is a working breed and they thrive when they have something to do. They make a wonderful addition to an active family and have proven themselves as an excellent breed with children. The breed is known for being very intelligent and they are often described as being very determined. They rarely back down from anything and do require a firm owner. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is usually very friendly and they are known for being cheerful. They are not the best as a guard dog, since they will accept everyone, but they do very well in multi-dog homes. Socialization is a must with this breed for them to accept other, non- canine, pets.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has few known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. In addition, the breed can be quite vocal and may not do well in urban settings.
Exercise: 
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

Grooming: 
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog is actually a very easy breed to grom and you should only have to brush the dog once or twice a week. The overall look of the dog should be shaggy and it is important to only bathe the dog when it is absolutely necessary. The hair on the face may need to be trimmed to keep the dog tidy. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis since the Basset Fauve de Bretange can suffer from ear infections and nails should be trimmed once or twice a week.
Origin: 
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne breed of dog was developed in France and was originally used as a hunting breed for small game as well as for larger game such as deer. The breed was developed from the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne and has been a popular breed for rabbit hunting for centuries.
