Breed Description: 

The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should have an elongated build with a longer body than they are tall. They should be low to the ground with short legs and they should have a level top line. The head should be in proportion with the rest of the dog but it should be dome shaped with very large eyes and a long muzzle.  There should be a small amount of wrinkles around the head but the rest of the dog should have a smooth line.  The ears should be very long and should hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long and slightly curved.

The coat of the Basset Artesien Normand should be short and smooth. It should cover the dog completely and lay flat against the skin.  The breed can be found in either orange, tan and white or orange and white.

Temperament: 
The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog is an affectionate little dog with an even temper and a gentle disposition. This is a wonderful family dog that can be gentle with children of all ages while still being courageous enough to want to protect their family. Although they are not a large breed, the Basset Artesien Normand is not recommended for new or timid owners. This is a breed that can be very stubborn and really need strong leadership when it comes to training. Once they are trained, the Basset Artesien Normand is usually a friendly dog that fits into their owners lives. They do well with other dogs but the Basset Artesien Normand can have a high prey drive and is not recommended for homes with small non-canine pets.

The average height for a Basset Artesien Normand is between 10 to 14 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Basset Artesien Normand is between 30 to 33 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog is a very hardy breed with very few health problems, however, their elongated body makes them prone to disc problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog can do very well in apartments and doesn't need a very large yard to keep them exercised. If they have access to a yard, it is important for the Basset Artesien Normand to have a fence since they will follow their noses and can easily get injured.
Exercise: 
The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog does not require a lot of exercise during the day and you should be able to meet their needs with two or three good walks per day. On average, about 30 minutes of exercise is recommended for this breed.

13 to 15 years
Grooming: 
The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Basset Artesien Normand breed of dog is an old breed that was developed in Normandy and Artois. It is believed to be one of the earlier basset breeds and one of the six basset breeds that are seen today. Although it is unclear what breeds went into the development of the Basset Artesien Normand, we do know that they were used for hunting and were documented as early as the 1600's.
