Breed Description: 

The Balkan Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be muscular wihtout appearing too course. They should have a level top line that is strong and sturdy and they should be slightly longer than they are tall. The head should be long with a moderately wide, and slightly domed skull and the ears should be medium in length and should hand down the side of the head. The tail should be long and should taper to a point.

The coat of the Balkan Hound should be short and smooth. It should cover the dog completely and be close to the skin, however, it should be rough in texture. There should be an undercoat The coat color should be red, ranging in shade from wheaten-red to fox-red, with a black saddle.

Temperament: 
The Balkan Hound breed of dog is known for their intelligent and hard working nature. This is a dog that loves to be on the go and he loves it more when he is hunting. The breed is known for being very energetic and lively, however, they can be quite calm when they are indoors. They do well with children but may need proper socialization to accept other dogs and pets. The breed can be quite stubborn so they need a firm and consistent owner. They are not recommended for new or timid owners.

The average height for a Balkan Hound is between 17.5 to 21 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Balkan Hound is between 35 to 45 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Balkan Hound breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Balkan Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is an active breed that needs plenty of room to play so the ideal living condition is a home with a large yard. It is important for this breed to have a fenced yard since they will follow anything that smells interesting to them.
Exercise: 
The Balkan Hound breed of dog is an active breed and they really do need a lot of exercise. Expect to give them about 60 minutes of exercise each day or about three very long walks. They make excellent jogging companions. They should only be exercised on leash when they are outside a secure area since they will follow any interesting scent.

Grooming: 
The Balkan Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Balkan Hound breed of dog has been linked to Yugoslavia for thousands of years, however, it is believed that the breed was first brought to the area by Phoenician traders around 1000BC. Because of their long history, the exact origins and the exact breeds that went into its creation are unknown. The breed was used for hunting throughout its history and was used for both large and small prey. The breed is considered to be a rare breed.
