Temperament:
The Azawakh Hound breed of dog is known for being very intelligent, loyal and alert. This is a breed that takes their role of family protector very seriously and they always seem to be on the ready for trouble of some kind. The breed tends to be very calm and this often translates to them being described as distant and reserved, however, the breed is usually very gentle with their owners. The Azawakh Hound is naturally suspicious of strangers and while they can do well with other dogs, they are not to be trusted with smaller, non-canine pets. They do need an owner who can provide firm and consistent training and rules and while they can adapt to life with children, they do much better if they are raised with them.

Weight:

Exercise:
The Azawakh Hound breed of dog is fairly inactive throughout the day but they do need ample exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Expect to give them 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day and make sure that they are always exercised in a secure area or on leash since they will chase after other animals.

10 to 12 years
Grooming:
The Azawakh Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin:
The Azawakh Hound breed of dog is a fairly old breed that was used and bred by several tribes in the Sahel region of Africa. The breed was used as companion dogs for the nomadic tribes and they were prized for their ability as both guard dogs and hunting dogs. The breed was used to hunt alongside the tribesmen but their most impressive use is as guard dogs that sleep on the roofs of the village homes and work as a pack to chase away any predators or intruders that threaten their village. The Azawakh Hound is still fairly unknown throughout the world, however, they were officially recognized by the UKC in 1993 and have gained some attention since then.
