Breed Description: 

The Avelignese breed of horse is actually the Italian version of the Haflinger.  These horses are considered to be the most numerous of the Italian breeds and they are widely found throughout Tuscany, Emilia and Central Southern Italy.  The Avelignese were developed in rocky, mountainous environments so they are a tough breed.  These horses are well suited for medium to heavy draft work, farm work, riding or as a pack horse.  They tend toward being a middleweight type of horse and are taller and heavier than the Haflinger.  They are a very versatile type of horse with a muscular frame, good conformation and good tough feet.  The head is usually quite small and light with lively, expressive eyes and small ears.  They tend to have a short and muscular neck and powerful shoulders which makes them very suitable for driving.  They tend to be a short, stocky horse with broad chests, wide, short backs, and round, muscular hindquarters.  They have stout well formed legs with some feathering around the fetlocks.  These horses are always a shade of chestnut with a flaxen or white mane and tail.

The Avelignese breed of horse is known for their generous, unflappable and quiet temperament. They are prized for their quiet, kind and trustworthy nature. In addition to their many other uses, they are the ideal horse for beginners, frightened riders or children.

They require little maintenance beyond the usual standards of food, water and shelter. They do tend to be quite thrifty and can thrive on small amounts of feed.

The Avelignese breed of horse has an average life span for a horse. Depending on management and environment, these horses can live to 25 or 30 years of age.
Grooming: 
The Avelignese breed of horse requires no special grooming. Like all horses, they will enjoy and benefit from daily grooming and should have their feet cleaned out daily as well. The Avelignese are known for their tough, hard feet and most don’t ever need shoes.
Origin: 
The Avelignese breed of horse was developed in the late 1800s in northern Italy but the exact origin of this breed is largely unknown.
