Breed Description:

The Australian Retriever breed of dog is a "designer" or mixed breed that was created by crossing the Australian Shepherd with the Golden Retriever.  Because of this, a breed type has not been established and the looks of the dog can greatly change from one puppy to the next.  Generally, the Australian Retriever will have qualities of both parents with a dense, medium length coat with a long tail that is heavily feathered. The build should be robust and athletic and the dogs tend to be slightly longer than they are tall.  The ears are medium in size and hang down the side of the head.  The Australian Retriever can be found in any colors that are common for the parent breeds, however, a tri-colored black, tan and white is very common, as is a white coat with light golden markings.  To determine what an Australian Retriever may look like, take the time to read up on both the Australian Shepherd and the Golden Retriever.

Temperament:
The Australian Retriever breed of dog is a designer breed and because of this, their temperament can vary greatly. However, they are known for being an exceptional family dog that is patient and loving with children and generally gets along well with other dogs. They may herd small children and animals, especially if they take after their Australian Shepherd parent, however, they are usually very friendly and calm. They are usually a very affectionate breed that is happiest when they are with their family.
Height:
The average height of an Australian Retriever is between 18 to 23 inches.
Weight:
The average weight of an Australian Retriever is between 40 to 45 pounds.
Health Problems:
The Australian Retriever breed of dog has no known health problems, however, is important to research both the Australian Shepherd and the Golden Retriever to be aware of any potential health problems your dog could be at risk for.
Living Conditions:
The Australian Retriever breed of dog can do well in apartments if they are properly exercised, however, the ideal is a home with a yard.
Exercise:
The Australian Retriever is a medium sized dog but that doesn't mean that they have moderate exercise needs. Both of the parent breeds are active so expect to give your Australian Retriever about 60 minutes of exercise each day and make sure that you offer them a large amount of intellectual stimulation as well.
Life Expectancy:
12 to 15 years
Grooming:
The Australian Retriever breed of dog does require a fair amount of grooming and you should expect to brush them two or three times a week at a minimum. During heavy shedding periods, expect to groom this dog every day and also be prepared for a large amount of hair in your home. The Australian Retriever should be bathed about once per month and the hair around the feet and under the ears should be trimmed on a regular basis to prevent matting and infections from occurring.
Origin:
The Australian Retriever breed of dog is a designer `hybrid` breed that has become popular over the last decade or so. There is no actual origin for the breed and if you are interested in learning more about the Australian Retriever, it is important to read up on both the Golden Retriever and the Australian Shepherd.
